Stages of Interior Design for Custom Homes & Full Renovations

There are three distinct interior design stages when renovating a home.  They are outlined below:

Construction Stage:

This stage is the choosing of the fixed elements that are installed as part of the construction of the house.  These could include a few or all of the following depending on your needs:  Entry doors, windows, exterior finishes, flooring, cabinetry, hardware, countertops, backsplashes, plumbing fixtures, shower systems, lighting fixtures, fireplaces, built-ins, doors, trim and railings.  Because these items cannot be easily changed after construction, it is very important that you get this right.  This is perhaps the most important stage because it provides the building blocks for which all of the other stages are based.  Every one of these fixed elements has a colour and a colour undertone and they must all work together.

This stage could stand alone or be combined with the Colour Consultation Stage and/or the Decorating Stage.  Ideally, the decision to use Chabot Interiors for this stage should be made prior to the beginning of construction; however, Chabot Interiors can jump in at any time

Colour Consultation Stage:

This stage is a recommendation on colour.  We would work together to choose the colour palette for each room of your home.  Typically each room has 3-4 different colours, one of which would be the wall colour, which is the primary colour (it usually represents 60% of the room); a secondary colour (30%) and 1-2 accent colours (5-10%).  Specifically, I would give suggestions for the colour of the walls, area rugs, furniture, window treatments and accessories.  All of these suggestions would be based on what was chosen for fixed elements, what you already own, and what items you are hoping to purchase.  Again, all items have a colour and a colour undertone.  There should be no more than two in any given space.  If you get it right, the space will be harmonious.

This stage must be completed in advance of the painter’s scheduled date.  If this is the only stage that you require help with, you must be able to provide the following information:  Access to the furniture and fabrics that will be going into the space, plus samples of all of the hard finishes and materials that have already been chosen.

Decorating Stage:

This stage includes choosing and installing the following items:  Area rugs, furniture, window treatments, pillows, throws, lamps, art and accessories.  It also includes a recommended floor plan based on furnishings that you own and any that you plan on purchasing.  This stage is best completed in conjunction with the Colour Consultation Stage.

The decorating stage can be completed at any time either before or after construction. However, to ensure that the paint colours are chosen to complement the room, it is best to have an inventory of items staying in the space plus some fabrics chosen prior to the painter’s schedule date.
